Round Bend U-Bolt - Most Common

Round bend U-bolts are suitable for carbon steel, stainless steel, and other rigid piping materials where uniform support is required.
Square Bend U-Bolt - Square Bottom Design
Square bend U-bolts have a flat bottom with 90-degree corners instead of a curved radius. This configuration provides a larger bearing surface on the pipe and is sometimes preferred for applications where the U-bolt must sit flush against a flat surface. Square bend U-bolts are commonly used in electrical conduit support, cable trays, and structural pipe clamps where space constraints require a compact profile.
Heavy Duty U-Bolt - Thicker Diameter + Double Nuts
Heavy duty U-bolts use larger diameter rod stock and may include double nuts (jam nut + primary nut) for enhanced locking in high-vibration environments. They are specified for large-diameter pipes, high-pressure systems, and applications where pipe movement must be prevented. Heavy duty U-bolts are commonly used in power plants, refineries, and heavy industrial facilities.
U-Bolt Dimension Measurement and Specification Definition
U-bolt dimensions are defined by three key parameters: the bend diameter A (inside width, corresponding to the pipe outer diameter), the width B (inside width between legs), and the leg length C (from the top of the bend to the end of the thread). The bend diameter A for a 2-inch pipe U-bolt is approximately 2.5 inches (64 mm) to provide clearance around the pipe. Standard U-bolt sizes cover pipe diameters from 1/2 inch to 24 inches (DN15 to DN600). Thread length on each leg is typically 2-4 inches depending on the overall leg length and nut height requirements.
U-Bolt Materials and Surface Treatment
Carbon steel (A36 or 1018) is the most common U-bolt material for general service, supplied with zinc electroplating or hot-dip galvanizing for corrosion protection. Stainless steel 304 and 316 grades are specified for food processing, pharmaceutical, chemical, and marine environments where corrosion resistance is critical. Alloy steel U-bolts are used for heavy load and high-temperature applications. Surface treatment selection follows the same principles as for other fasteners - electroplating for indoor/dry, hot-dip galvanizing for outdoor/wet, and stainless steel for corrosive or hygienic service.
U-Bolt Thread Standards
UNC coarse threads are the standard for U-bolts, providing robust threads that are easy to assemble and less susceptible to damage in field conditions. UNF or metric threads are available for specific requirements or regional standards. Full thread U-bolts have threads along the entire leg length, while partial thread U-bolts have threads only at the leg ends with an unthreaded section near the bend. Matching nuts are typically hex nuts, with nylon lock nuts or heavy hex nuts used for vibration-prone applications.
U-Bolt Installation Guide
Proper U-bolt installation starts with selecting a U-bolt size that matches the pipe outer diameter with adequate clearance. The U-bolt is placed around the pipe, and the threaded legs are inserted through the support holes. Flat washers are placed under each nut to distribute the bearing load and prevent galling. Nuts are tightened alternately to the specified torque level. For pipes requiring thermal insulation, U-bolts with extended leg lengths accommodate the insulation thickness. In vibration environments, double nuts (jam nut) or lock nuts are recommended to prevent loosening.
U-Bolt Load Capacity and Selection
U-bolt load capacity depends on the rod diameter, material grade, bend radius, and the quality of the bend forming process. The applied load includes the weight of the pipe, the media contained, any insulation, and external loads such as wind or ice. Pipe support spacing standards (ASME B31.1 for power piping, B31.3 for process piping) specify maximum support spacing based on pipe size and content. A safety factor of 3:1 to 5:1 is typically applied for U-bolt load ratings depending on the application criticality.
U-Bolt vs Pipe Clamp vs Pipe Strap
U-bolts provide reliable medium-load pipe support and are suitable for most industrial piping applications. Pipe clamps are designed for applications requiring frequent removal - they have a hinged or bolted split design that allows the clamp to be opened and closed without removing bolts. Pipe straps are lighter-duty fasteners used for building services piping (plumbing, HVAC) where loads are low and the pipe is attached to walls or ceilings rather than structural steel.

ASME B18.31.2 covers U-bolt dimensional standards in the United States. DIN 3570 and DIN 3567 specify European standard U-bolt dimensions. GB/T 885 and GB/T 2329 cover Chinese standard U-bolts.
