Why 2205 duplex (UNS S31803)?

UNS S31803 is the original 2205 duplex composition (≈22% Cr, 3% Mo, 5–6% Ni, ~0.15% N). It combines an austenitic–ferritic microstructure that delivers two decisive advantages in seawater service:

 Roughly twice the yield strength of 316L (min. 450 MPa vs ~215 MPa), allowing thinner walls, lighter spools, and lower freight and welding cost.

 Excellent chloride resistance - PREN ≈ 34–35, far above 316L (~25), with strong immunity to chloride stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) that routinely defeats austenitic grades in hot, concentrated brines.

PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N ≈ 34–35 for 2205 duplex.

Because duplex is sensitive to detrimental intermetallic phases if improperly heat-treated, every heat was verified before shipment:

 100% Positive Material Identification (PMI) by OES/ XRF.

 Hydrostatic test per ASTM A999 / customer spec.

 Ultrasonic (UT) and eddy-current (ET) inspection of seamless bodies.

 Intermetallic-phase check per ASTM A923 Method C and pitting check per ASTM G48.

 Flattening / flange testing and charpy impact at −46 °C where specified.
