ASTM A790 Duplex 2205 Seamless Tubing Ships to Colombia, Chinese Pipe Maker Expands Further into South American Oil & Gas Market

HENAN, China, Oct. 20, 2026 - A shipment of duplex stainless steel 2205 (UNS S32205) seamless tubing, manufactured to ASTM A790 / ASME SA790, completed port consolidation at the Zhangjiagang terminal in Jiangsu Province today and departed for Buenaventura, Colombia. The vessel is expected to arrive in approximately 35 days, with the material destined for a seawater cooling system and oil and gas gathering line project in the South American country. It is the company's second duplex order for the Colombian market this year, and the first time its 2205 seamless tubing has entered a Colombian end-user project at full container-load scale.

Technical Highlights

With a microstructure of roughly 50% austenite and 50% ferrite, duplex 2205 offers a yield strength of at least 450 MPa - approximately twice that of 316L - and a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 34–38. This gives it excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and pitting, making it a standard choice for seawater systems, desalination plants, and gathering lines in sour oil and gas service.

"The coastal projects in Colombia place very high demands on chloride corrosion resistance. During technical evaluation the client specifically required ASTM A923 Method C intermetallic phase reports and ferrite content data," the project manager for the order said at the loading site. "We trace every length back to the steel heat number and to its specific heat-treatment curve."

According to the company, all tubing underwent full testing before shipment, including transverse tensile, flattening, flare, hardness (≤30 HRC) and metallographic ferrite content (45%–55%). Base metal hardness was controlled in accordance with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 to accommodate possible wet H₂S service.

Market Context

South America has steadily increased investment in upstream oil and gas development, seawater desalination and port infrastructure, with demand for duplex stainless steel tubing growing at an average annual rate of 6%–8%. Colombia, a significant regional oil and gas producer, generates steady purchasing demand for 2205 and 2507 duplex grades through refinery turnaround work and seawater cooling system upgrades. Industry analysts note that Chinese pipe makers are gradually taking share from traditional European suppliers on the strength of lead times, cost-effectiveness and full size-range coverage.

The company said a further batch of 2205 and super duplex 2507 (UNS S32750) tubing is currently under technical review with South American clients, and that full-year duplex export volume is expected to grow by more than 20% year on year.
