Heat Treatment

ASTM A333 requires heat treatment to control the microstructure and properties of covered pipe, subject to the grade and applicable standard provisions. For Grade 6, normalized treatment and other permitted heat-treatment routes may be used in accordance with ASTM A333/A333M. The heat-treatment condition should be recorded on the MTC when required by the order.

Q1. What is the minimum service temperature of ASTM A333 Gr.6?

The standard specifies the impact test at -45 °C / -50 °F, with a 3-piece average ≥ 18 J. The general project design temperature should be ≥ -45 °C; lower temperatures require Gr.7 / Gr.8 / Gr.9 etc.

Q2. Is ASTM A333 Gr.6 the same as SA-333 Gr.6?

Fully equivalent. SA-333 is the ASME version of A333; both material, tests and acceptance are identical - only the issuing standard number differs. ASME pressure piping projects (B31.1 / B31.3) must use SA-333.

Q3. What is the difference between Gr.6 and Gr.1 / Gr.3?

All three are carbon steels with the same impact temperature (-45 °C) but slightly different composition ranges (Gr.3 contains Ni). Gr.6 is the most commonly specified and most easily procured grade.

Q4. Is NACE MR 0175 required?

Only when the medium is sour (H₂S-containing) oil & gas environment. Add hardness limits (typically HRC ≤ 22) and S6 supplementary requirement. Ordinary LNG / chemical projects do not require it.
